About The Impulse Powers

Nick has been studying and writing poetry, and recording and producing his own music (under the pseudonym The Impulse Powers), for over twenty years, graduating with a PhD in English literature in 2009.

His most recent writing marries the two forms, reflecting on the music of 1993, a formative year (when he was 17). Each piece enacts a particularly meaningful song from that year.

In spring 2021 Nick won the Orton Poetry Competition for his poem “They never turn the white lights on”. He lives and works in Manchester with his wife Jill and son Colum.
